HOW TO USE HYPNOSIS TO CURE A MEDICAL OR EMOTIONAL PROBLEM

Hypnotherapy and self-hypnosis are becoming increasingly popular methods of treatment for many stress-or fear-related conditions, such as eating disorders, insomnia and agoraphobia. Hypnosis has also been used to help people stop or modify unwanted habits such as smoking and excessive drinking. It has also been used to treat a wide range of physical ailments, including asthma, high blood pressure, skin problems, migraines, and certain digestive disorders.

While there is no conclusive scientific evidence as to the overall effectiveness of hypnosis, some doctors who have had success with this type of treatment say that most disorders respond within 1 to 12 sessions. The actual duration of the treatment varies according to each specific individual and problem.

The use of self-hypnosis usually follows treatment by a hypnotherapist, as it requires some initial professional guidance. The hypnotherapist will use various methods to help you develop a therapeutic trance (hypnotic state) in which you relax and focus your attention. For example, you may move into a hypnotic state by concentrating on the hypnotherapist’s voice or by focusing on a specific object. Once you are “under” or in a hypnotic state— characterized by heightened mental awareness, deep relaxation and suggestibility—the hypnotherapist will communicate suggestions to your subconscious.

Being in a hypnotic state does not mean that you are asleep. Scientists, who have studied EEG recordings of hypnotized subjects’ brain waves, have discovered that the waveforms match those found in people who are awake but relaxed, with their eyes closed. Therefore, at the end of the session you will simply open your eyes and will be fully aware of everything that occurred.

Once a hypnotherapist has helped you to develop a therapeutic trance, you can use the same or similar techniques on your own to help fight physical or emotional problems. Many people are using self-hypnosis as a means of learning how to relax, to control emotionally based problems or habits and to reduce pain and other physical problems.
