NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS PREVENTING CANCER: PROANTHOCYANDINS AND PYCOGENOL. PROBIOTICS

Proanthocyandins and Pycogenol

Proanthocyandins, also known as oligomeric proanthocyandins are flavin bioflavonoids. They are naturally occurring substances found in a variety of foods and plants. Clinical tests indicate they are 50 times more potent than vitamin E and 20 times more potent than vitamin Ñ in terms of bioavailable antioxidant activity. They strengthen and repair connective tissue and contain strong anti-inflammatory actions. The two main sources of proanthocyandins are pine bark extract (pycogenol) and grape seed extract.

Pycogenol is a patented antioxidant blend of various bioflavonoids, including proanthocyandins. It is extracted from the maritime pine tree, native to France, and can also be extracted from grape seeds. Ferulic acid, found in pycogenol is believed to prevent many forms of cancer. Gallic acid is also found in pycogenol and prevents many carcinogens from inducing chromosome mutations. Pycogenol protects capillaries from attack by free radicals and protects the cell membranes of red blood cells and helps to keep them flexible. Pycogenol possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties.

Bioflavonoids, catechins and proanthocyandins all possess strong anti-cancer properties.

Probiotics

Probiotics have proved, in thousands of studies, to be indispensable in keeping us healthy by cleansing our intestines of excess pathogens, thus preventing allergies, yeast infections, diarrhoea, gas, bloating, digestive problems and disease.

Resveratrol

Another important flavonoid, made from the skin of grapes, is resveratrol. It is a relatively newly discovered compound that is believed to be the active ingredient in grape skin and red wine. It is a flavonoid that seems to protect the heart and also has been found to inhibit cancer formation. It is also thought that resveratrol is responsible for the low incidence of breast and prostatic cancers among vegetarians and Orientals respectively. Rather than try to consume these flavonoids in the form of wine – and risk the adverse health effects of alcohol – I recommend resveratrol supplements to patients.
